Don’t Let These 6 LinkedIn Ads Mistakes Drain Your Budget

One of the big challenges with LinkedIn Ads is that they're incredibly powerful when they work... but they can also become a very expensive learning experience if you don't know where the traps are.

Over the years, we've reviewed well over 100 LinkedIn ad accounts and one thing has become very clear.

Most businesses are struggling simply because they're making a handful of common mistakes that are eating away at performance and budget.

The frustrating part is that many of these issues aren't obvious. Your campaigns can still be generating clicks, impressions and activity while money is leaking out in the background.

So today, I wanted to share six of the biggest mistakes we see time and time again – and, more importantly, what to do instead. The insights below are based on lessons from more than 100 LinkedIn ad accounts.

1. Letting LinkedIn control your bids

Letting LinkedIn control your bids

One of the most common mistakes we see is leaving campaigns on automatic bidding or "Maximum Delivery".

At first glance it sounds sensible. After all, LinkedIn is optimising the campaign for you.

The problem is that LinkedIn's priorities and your priorities aren't always the same.

In many cases, automatic bidding can push costs up unnecessarily, particularly when click-through rates are low. Instead of maintaining control over what you're willing to pay, you're effectively handing the steering wheel over to the platform.

In most situations, we recommend starting with manual bidding and controlling spend more closely.

There are exceptions, particularly for retargeting campaigns and highly qualified audiences, but for many businesses this one change alone can make a significant difference.

2. Trying to get married on the first date

Trying to get married on the first date

This is one of my favourite analogies because it's something I see all the time.

A business launches a LinkedIn ad and immediately asks for a sales call.

The problem is that most people aren't ready.

Think about your own buying behaviour. You don't discover a company on Monday and sign a contract on Tuesday. You read, research, compare options and build confidence before making a decision.

B2B buyers are no different.

In fact, many purchases involve multiple stakeholders, longer sales cycles and higher levels of scrutiny.

Instead of asking for the sale immediately, focus on building trust first through valuable content, guides, webinars, insights or resources that demonstrate your expertise.

You don’t need to generate a customer from the first interaction. What you should be generating at that stage is confidence.

3. Using the wrong location settings

Using the wrong location settings

This one catches a lot of people out.

When setting up LinkedIn Ads, there's a small location option that many advertisers never think twice about.

If you select "Recent or permanent location", LinkedIn can show your ads to people who are temporarily visiting a country rather than actually living there.

That means someone travelling through London on business could see your UK campaign despite not being part of your target audience.

In this case, you’re paying for clicks from people you never intended to target.

A small setting, but one that can have a surprisingly large impact on campaign efficiency.

4. Leaving the LinkedIn Audience Network switched on

Leaving the LinkedIn Audience Network switched on

This is a big one.

Many advertisers assume their LinkedIn Ads are appearing primarily on LinkedIn.

In reality, a significant proportion of spend can end up being pushed into the LinkedIn Audience Network instead.

That means your ads may be appearing across partner websites and apps outside the LinkedIn platform.

Now, there are situations where this can work well.

However, if your goal is to drive high-quality traffic from a very specific audience, it often creates more noise than value.

I've seen accounts where a huge percentage of spend was going towards placements outside LinkedIn altogether!

For many lead generation campaigns, switching off the Audience Network can immediately improve traffic quality and budget efficiency.

5. Creating offers nobody actually wants

Creating offers nobody actually wants

Most businesses talk about their product, but the best businesses talk about their customer's problem.

There’s a huge difference.

Nobody wakes up excited about your software features, service process or internal methodology.

What they care about are outcomes, saving time, generating revenue and reducing stress.

Before launching your next campaign, ask yourself: "What does my audience actually want?"

If your advert focuses on that answer rather than on what you think is impressive, your performance usually improves dramatically.

People don't buy features, they buy solutions.

6. Looking like every other advert on LinkedIn

Looking like every other advert on LinkedIn

Take a quick look through your LinkedIn feed.

You'll notice a lot of blue… a lot of white… a lot of grey.

Now imagine you're trying to capture attention in that environment.

One of the simplest ways to improve performance is to create ads that visually stand out.

That means making them noticeable, and at the same time, keeping your messaging incredibly simple.

One of the best pieces of advice I've ever received was to explain your advert as if you were speaking to a ten-year-old. If the message isn't immediately clear, it's probably too complicated.

Think simple messages, strong visuals and multiple creative variations.

It's not revolutionary advice, but it does work.

Final thoughts

succeed with LinkedIn Ads

The businesses that succeed with LinkedIn Ads aren't necessarily spending more than everyone else. They're just avoiding the mistakes that quietly destroy performance.

If you can:

  • Control your bidding

  • Build trust before asking for a sale

  • Tighten your targeting

  • Keep spend focused on the right placements

  • Create compelling offers

  • Stand out creatively

...you'll already be ahead of most advertisers on the platform.
